How to Bed In a New Clutch: Bedding-In Guide

Bedding-in allows the clutch friction disc to mate evenly with the flywheel and pressure plate. Smooth, gentle engagement helps establish proper contact between these surfaces. Excessive heat during this period can cause glazing and affect clutch performance.

How to Bed In Your New Clutch

1. Drive Gently for 500–700 Miles

Use the car for normal everyday journeys with smooth starts and gentle acceleration. Town driving provides regular opportunities to engage the clutch, so avoid relying solely on motorway miles to complete the bedding-in period.

2. Keep Revs Below 3,500 RPM

Follow our recommended limit of 3,500 RPM, avoiding harsh acceleration and high engine loads. Select an appropriate gear rather than making the engine struggle at low revs in a high gear.

3. Use Smooth Gear Changes

Engage and release the clutch smoothly, using only as much slip as needed to pull away. Once moving, take your foot completely off the clutch pedal.

4. Avoid Aggressive Driving

Throughout the bedding-in period, avoid:

  • Hard launches or dropping the clutch.

  • Full-throttle acceleration and high-RPM gear changes.

  • Track days, drifting and other demanding driving.

  • Riding or excessively slipping the clutch.

  • Holding the car on a hill using the clutch—use the brakes instead.

5. Pay Attention to Noise and Clutch Feel

The biting point and pedal feel may differ from your previous clutch. Some aftermarket clutch and flywheel combinations can also produce additional mechanical noise.

However, excessive or worsening noise, severe judder, difficulty selecting gears or clutch slipping should be investigated. Contact your installer rather than assuming these symptoms will disappear with mileage.

After the Bedding-In Period

Once you have completed the required bedding-in procedure, gradually increase driving demands, provided the clutch is operating correctly.

Always follow the clutch manufacturer’s specific instructions if they differ from this guide. Requirements vary between clutch designs and friction materials.
