Rusty Subframe on a 350Z?

We regularly hear from 350Z owners who have been told their car has a “rusty subframe”. Often, the components needing attention are the surrounding steel kidney brackets and W-brace.

The aluminium subframe itself does not develop steel-type rust, although aluminium can still corrode. A proper inspection helps identify exactly which parts need attention.

Look for heavy flaking, holes, thinning metal and corrosion around fixings and mounting points. Replacing a brace alone will not resolve damage to the structure it attaches to.

Help Protect Your Car Through Winter

Regularly washing away road salt and checking underneath can help you spot deterioration early. Protective finishes should also be inspected for damage, especially around edges and fixings.

If you notice corrosion, have it assessed before covering it with paint or underseal. A fresh coating cannot restore weakened metal.
